F.A.Q.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I still register?
Unfortunately no, registration is now closed. Hopefully, we will see you next year though!
How do I know if I’ve been accepted?
An acceptance letter will be sent to your parents. If you are not accepted, you will receive a rejection letter. However, a rejection letter means you will be moved to the waitlist. If someone drops out, you may be able to join. If not, you will be prioritized if you wish to join again next year.
When will I know if I've been accepted?
All letters have been sent, please check your inbox. If you applied but haven't received anything, please contact our Lead Facilitator at ekehler@retsd.mb.ca
What if I registered but my availability changes?
Please only submit one response in the form. If you forgot any information or need to make any changes please email our Lead Facilitator at ekehler@retsd.mb.ca
How do you choose who gets in?
VolunTeen registration is first come, first serve. However, those who are already on the waitlist from previous years will be prioritized. The next priority will be given to those who have never attended.
Do we get paid?
No, you do not get paid to volunteer. Volunteering is about gaining valuable experience and knowledge and better understanding of your community, allowing you better paid opportunities in the future.
Do I need my own transportation to the sites?
No, our facilitators will provide transportation in their personal vehicles. It is your job however, to get to and from the school in the morning and afternoon.
Do I have to come everyday?
Yes, if you are accepted into the program, you are expected to attend everyday of your chosen week.
Is lunch provided?
No, you are required to bring your own lunch. We may have some snacks, but nothing to fill you up after all that hard work volunteering!
What do I need to bring?
A water bottle and lunch. Proper footwear is required, many sites require close-toe shoes and you will be standing/moving around for long periods of time (no crocs or sandals please). A jacket, hat and sunscreen are also recommended. But most importantly, bring yourself!
How much does the program cost?
The program is completely free!
How old do I have to be?
You must be entering grades 7 through 12 to be eligible to join.
What time does it start each day?
VolunTeen starts at 9:00 a.m. sharp.
What time does it end?
VolunTeen ends at 3:30 p.m.
What do we do at sites?
It depends on where the site is, however, here is a general overview of some things we have done in the past.
At Siloam Mission, we have sorted donations and clothing, as well as prepare kitchen utensils and serve patrons. This year, VolunTeens over 14 years of age are able to work in the kitchen.
At Winnipeg Harvest, we have sorted food donations and checked the quality of items like potatoes and onions.
We have done trash clean up and geocaching at parks and the Forks.
At personal care homes such as Bethania and Luther Home, we have done bingo and bowling.
Depending on the week, we have helped out at several summer festivals.
